Under Their Skin

Apparently I've gotten under the skin of Occupy Calgary.

Case in point.

Colin please explain where and how I have slandered you or your group?

My previous post was a collection of your own words and commentary from Twitter, mostly media reporting on the days events.

So please point me to where I have slandered.

Note Colin replied in comments and I responded. You can see that entry here.

  1. If he is one of the squatters who the hell is he to be asking what you do with your spare time!

  2. That'd actually be libel Jane, you'd have to be speaking falsehoods for it to be slander :)

  3. Ahh yes, thanks for the correction Matt.

Thankfully neither slander nor libel apply to what I've said or written about them. :)

  4. Considering the Occupyer's like to hide behind charter rights like the right to free speech and protest its hypocritical of these idiots to be upset when you exercise your right to free speech.

Its also hilariously stupid that for a group that talks about vibrant public forums and a sharing of ideas in an open manner that they're not only turning their facebook page to super top secret, but booting people out for sending you information.

I don't really know what these fools are protesting for.

but that they're asking for the city to pay for repairs and meeting rooms etc that come from the tax payer its not the 99%

They certainly aren't protesting for freedom of speech

After their antics in the court room it isn't for enlightenment and discussion.

If its a protest to illustrate that a bunch of morons can get together and waste time and resources while self fertilizing the park and acting like animals, mission accomplished, you proved it, protest a success you can go home now.

  5. I'd just like to mention that the protestors aren't asking the city for anything. meeting rooms and event planners are what the city has offered in exchange for removal of the tents. No thanks :]

  6. also, for the record, colin is neither camping nor unemployed.

  7. Hi Alex,

You're not asking for anything? Then why do you have a thread dedicated to just that on your forum?
Titled: "Things we might want to ask the city to provide"
    http://forum.occupycalgary.ca/showthread.php?64-Things-we-might-want-to-ask-the-city-to-provide

For the record, no one has said Colin was unemployed. And one anonymous comment said "if" he is one of the....

Feel free to point out the references if I somehow have missed them.

    Thanks,
    Jane

  8. Hi Jane,

    Fair enough. Let me rephrase:

In response to Greg's comment: "but that they're asking for the city to pay for repairs and meeting rooms etc that come from the tax payer its not the 99%"

These were possible "demands" when the city tried to open negotiations. The idea of the city providing indoor meeting space and providing planners for the GA's/Assemblies was an option originally put on the table by them. (I'm trying to find the link, will post as soon as I do or find the paper copy of the offer to scan up)OC did not come out and ask for that, before the City offered it. Also, in response to asking the city to pay for repairs, we aren't. And they aren't asking OC to pay because they can't prove that any of the damages were caused by protestors. The City just wanted to hand OC a fancy 50+ page affidavit with color photos of radom grafitti in a public washroom downtown. I refer you to this article from the Herald:

    http://digital.calgaryherald.com/epaper/viewer.aspx

Specifically these comments made by Collen Sinclair, the lawyer for the City:

"According to the city’s submissions, Olympic Plaza has incurred costs of $53,343.87 as a result of the protest.

The municipality estimated more than $12,000 to replace sod and $15,000 to fix damage to the washrooms. Although the latter figure was in relation to a broken hand dryer, chipped paint, a damaged door and graffiti, city lawyers said they couldn’t prove the befouling had been caused by Occupy Calgary protesters.

“If we knew exactly who had caused that damage, a charge would have been laid,” said city co-counsel Colleen Sinclair.

Court documents also said the city had spent an additional $3,360 on security and $1,835 turning off power to the park as a result of Occupy Calgary’s continued residency."

On a further note, the security was hired for the group at St Pat's park, who were a totally seperate group from those at Olympic Plaza, and the power was shut off to the park on October 13 and 14, 2011 - the day before the original rally even kicked off. This was not done after any tents were set up, but rather as a preemptive action by the city, who knew that a rally would be held there,(but not that tents would be set up as they thought people would be heading to St Pat's), and in my humble opinion the City can pay for that out of their own shallow pockets. The affidavit also included other outrageous claims such as $1600 for the replacement of the hand dryer in the men's room (which still to this day has not been replaced, you can go look for yourself if you like..)and a $4200 bill for 4 loudspeakers from Bowness Park..?..

In regards to Anon's comment about Colin: "If he is one of the squatters..." I was merely clearing up that Colin isn't camping and then chose to add that for the record, he is also employed.

    Always a slice,
    Alex

  9. Alex: "and in my humble opinion the City can pay for that out of their own shallow pockets."

I'm sure you realize those are "our" pockets. The City doesn't have any money of their "own".

So since Colin isn't replying, perhaps you could share with us where I have "trashed" or "slandered" or been "libelous" to the occupiers.

  10. Jane,

I can't speak for Colin, and I haven't personally said that you are being slanderous etc. but I'm sure he'll comment if/when he sees the post.

Fine, "our" pockets, because yes, I'm a taxpayer too. I was merely trying to highlight the City's poor choice of resource allocation as shown in their affidavit, again only in my opinion.

    Alex

  11. In response to earlier comments... I am NOT one of the "Squatters". I have a career of 10 years in electronics manufacturing, so no I'm not a jobless whiner either.

And for your information taking other people's words (especially in text form), cutting out the parts that are no good for supporting your agenda. then spinning the rest to imply that the people in this movement are constantly at each others throats. Is in fact slander... You have removed the "context" of the actual conversation, and largely ignored anything that is actually good or progressive.

It is inevitable when you bring a diverse group of people together that they will in fact disagree. But there are also ways to work together and around that. Case and point, I personally don't actually support the continued presence of the camp itself and I have made that known before. However I am getting ready to head down there again to bring people food and even warm clothing.

I do this because they are PEOPLE! Standing up for what they feel is right. I might not agree with the specific methods, but if simply spit that in someones face, it destroys any chance of working together on common ground.

However as for you, and anyone supporting your little laugh riot here. You are achieving nothing that is even the slightest bit productive. Nothing you are doing right here is ever going to solve any problems. You are from what I can see only scheming the next way to get a laugh out of people over how the supposed 'dirty hippies are arguing with each other'.

If that's all you can manage in the expenditure of time you put into this, then it saddens me to realize you, likely have any real self-worth deep inside.

And if you think a electronics manufacturer don't have the ability to make such a pronouncement. This particular worker happens to spend a great deal of his free time reading philosophy, Psychology, neuroscience and even theoretical physics... Because I like it and it's fun.

  12. you are shit disturber Jane, you know how to push peoples buttons and get a reaction, and people give you one! haha fun. If anything you aid is helping people grow strong by testing and challenging them! Nothing should exist without being challenged or questioned!

"Considering the Occupyer's like to hide behind charter rights like the right to free speech and protest its hypocritical of these idiots to be upset when you exercise your right to free speech."

I fully support critical thinking and questioning of everything including occupy!

"Its also hilariously stupid that for a group that talks about vibrant public forums and a sharing of ideas in an open manner that they're not only turning their facebook page to super top secret, but booting people out for sending you information."

Perhaps because they feel it is an abuse of the forum? It is also their right.

"I don't really know what these fools are protesting for."
Name calling? have you come down and talked with anyone. We are facing one of the most critical times in human history. It is a protest/ awareness of issues locally and globally on every front, it is a movement with no start or finish, with a rich world history of truth and peace, It is also a celebration of potential.

"but that they're asking for the city to pay for repairs and meeting rooms etc that come from the tax payer its not the 99%"

We never asked that is their offer, no one has accepted anything. The damages are being questioned as they appear to most likely be from prior, residual public damages.

"They certainly aren't protesting for freedom of speech

After their antics in the court room it isn't for enlightenment and discussion."

Way to put everyone in one box from very few examples. We all have flaws and we are all working towards happiness and health for all!

" If its a protest to illustrate that a bunch of morons can get together and waste time and resources while self fertilizing the park and acting like animals, mission accomplished, you proved it, protest a success you can go home now."
Name calling, I cant believe this post was approved. the occupooping was from the tabloid the sun, but be sure to take it 100% literally, no one saw anyone occupoop, and many dogs come through the park, even though I believe they are not allowed. No one has seen the occupooper who left the under the pole poop, human or animal so everyone jokes that it must have been a yeti.

please be respectful and actually visit an occupied site and talk with real people before drawing any conclusions.

  17. Jane obviously your spies have let you down. Many of the claims made by the city were shot down in court on Friday. They could not prove who did the damage, or even when the damage was done. The washrooms were undergoing a routine and scheduled improvement at that time as well. As to claims the citizens were inconvenienced, threatened or verbally assaulted by the occupy group, the city could not find 1 person to backup that claim in the days leading up to the court case. With all their resources, they could not find anybody to support them. The city parks expert to testify on the damage to the grass was not even familiar with that park as he dealt with the parks in another part of the city.

You and your hubby keep making statements that they are uneducated and unemployed. Maybe it is you guys that need an education.

Keep blogging away. It will be just as successful as your husbands political career. Tell me again, how many different parties and how many losses has he experienced? I have trouble with big numbers.

  18. Anon 10:24:00 PM

I hate to break it to you, but not only do you have problems with numbers bigger than three, comprehension doesn't seem to be your forte either.

I haven't written any commentary on the what transpired at court.

I have never called any one, let alone the occupiers uneducated.

The only references I've made to homelessness and the occupy movement have been on Twitter and it was in regards to the St. Pats group. And they most certainly weren't derogatory.

Go back, reread what I've written and show me my quotes you have a problem with.

Until then I will assume you are confusing me with Cory. Yes, he can be an opinionated hard ass --- get over it.

You have a problem with him, go post on his blog.

  19. The hostility oozes. Occupiers are striving for change and it's about time. The WORLD is waking up. Hundreds of thousands of people are opening their minds. When you do, it will be quite a revelation. I am neither an unemployed bum nor a camper but I am what some would call part of the 99%. I have been homeless. I have worked within the system. I am a Social Worker. I work for non profit agencies doing what I can to help. I have seen both sides of the fence and neither side is desirable today. The system is corrupt. I know, I have seen it first hand. Keep reading our posts and sharing them (in their original state)and one day something is going to hit very close to home and your eyes will open. When it is your Mother or Father or Sister or Brother or Child who is sick and/or dying and you cannot AFFORD healthcare. You cannot AFFORD prescriptions. You watch them as they slowly die suffering in pain. When your family loses its home that they WORKED for their whole lives in order to pay medical bills. When a sick father chooses to die in order to save that house and savings for his children then maybe your eyes will be open. This is what our healthcare system does for us. And so it goes on. Our whole system has nothing to do with our welfare but only the welfare of the very few who control. Is this the society you want for yourself and your children. All the occupiers want to fairness and equality for all and that includes you. They are occupying for your right to live.

Yet another anonymous poster. No one will even start to take you seriously until you start to speak in your own name and come out from behind the masks.

All the screen snaps are in their original state. As I explained here:

This could be quickly cleared up if your Facebook and Forum were accessible to the public.

  23. I think its laughable that you deny that you're group wants anything when its laid out very simply in your own website about what you're group wants.

I think its laughable that you deny that you want anything for free when you demand and then take free electricity, when you demand free condoms.

I think its hilarious that you're group denies damage to the park when there has been photographic evidence that counters it.

I laughed that you're group denied in court that you had received an offer from the city when on your own website one of you're posters talked about burning the offer that would have given you a permanent booth in the plaza.

I don't understand what you people want because when I went down to the occupy when it started it made no sense.

Its almost like you people took the best Michael Douglas soundbites from wallstreet and used that as your argument.

I have no problem with the OWS movement in the States because they have the right to be angry even though they are literally targeting the wrong groups.

You're not waking people up, you're turning people off.

We live in a country with a highly advanced social welfare program, we live in a country with some of the most generous unemployment benefits on the planet. We live in a country where health care is literally free, we live in a country where college tuition is highly subsidized. We live in a country where the top 1% of income earners play more then a quarter of the nations income tax revenue. We don't have rampant unemployment especially in this province.

Are there problems? Absolutelty, but thee people when I talked to down there when I went had no clue what they were, and it was almost like they were taking the rules and issues in the states and trying to apply them here.

There are legitimate things that could be discussed, namely the closing of income tax holes for example, the increase in punative penalties for corporate fraud and personal fraud. But those things are lost in the clatter of wall street jingoism, and just plain failure to comprehend what in the hell you're movement is talking about.

You're group is not about free speech its about screeching and yelling down those who you disagree with it. The concept of having so called vibrant public forums is a joke because nobody knows what the hell the agenda is.

I'm baffled at the whole thing, and it makes sense that you're group is getting 50 people out to protests ina city of over a million people, its because after 2 or three months of protesting you have no traction, you sound greedy, and you sound like self entitled teenagers.

  24. Hey Anon 8:46

Funny I don't remember hiring an internet ghost to police the activity on my blog.

You want to determine the "focus" of a blog -- create your own.

I haven't seen "fighting"; heated discussion perhaps.

If it's too warm for you maybe this blog post is more suitable for you.
